About us
Our team consists of four international students, Melisse, Amber, Floris and Martijn, and one Indonesian student, Ivan, all studying at the Universitas Gadjah Mada. We are eager to learn about the Indonesian culture, but often the Indonesian language barrier limits the experience. Therefore we started this language platform SLANG for people that wish to learn a new language, just like us. Melisse, Amber, Floris and Martijn are all Dutch, around the age of 20. Although we know we are not going to use the Indonesian language intensively after our exchange programme, we believe that learning Bahasa Indonesia is very valuable for us during this period. Moreover, we would like to visit this beautiful country again, which is mainly due to our future ability to have conversations with the local people.
Let’s introduce ourselves
Hello to you all! My name is Floris Hesselink and I am proud to be the CEO of SLANG. Currently I’m at the age of twenty-one. I’m from the Netherlands, I study in the city of Enschede. This is a city in the east of the Netherlands. One of the reasons why I wanted to study in Indonesia was the fact that I wanted to experience the culture, food and weather of Indonesia myself. So far this has been an amazing experience. I love living in the city of students, Yogyakarta. I’m always eager to learn the language of the country that I’m staying in, but taking official courses would be too expensive. Therefore, SLANG the language platform, would be the perfect solution for me.
Hey guys! My name is Martijn Hogeslag and I’m the CFO of SLANG. I’m 21 years old. I’m Dutch and I’m studying in Enschede as well. The study I’m doing is called Bedrijfseconomie and I’m currently in the fourth and last year. I really wanted to go to Indonesia during my study, because I love the culture, the people and of course the food of Indonesia. During my six month stay in Indonesia, I really want to learn Bahasa Indonesia. We have a lot of people that are willing to help us and I wanted to give them something back. That’s why I’m ‘teaching’ Dutch and learning Bahasa Indonesia at the same time, because of the language platform SLANG. I definitely love this concept and I hope I can share my Dutch skills with you as well!
Hello everybody, I am Melisse and I’m the CMO of SLANG. I am 20 year old student in Groningen in the Netherlands but now I’m really enjoying my time in Indonesia. One of the things that really enhances my experience over here, is the ability to have a small talk with the local people. I am really surprised by the way the local people are living over here and it’s so nice to talk with them about their lives. One of my favourite things is talking about the local food which I am now able to do due to Slang!
Hi my name is Amber, and I’m happy to be the COO of SLANG. I’m a 20-year-old student from Groningen, in the Netherlands. I am studying International Business, a study in which intercultural experiences and exchanges are highly important. My passion for this education is one of the reasons why I would love to learn new languages, such as Bahasa Indonesia. During my exchange period here in Jogjakarta I would be able to really get the most out of the ‘local’ experience. The language platform SLANG helps me achieve this goal in a fun, flexible and easy manner.
Hello friends, my name is Ivan Noor Wicaksono and I am the HR of SLANG. I'm a 22-year-old student from Indonesia and I am studying at UGM. I am studying International Business and focusing on Operation Management. For me SLANG has not started as a project to learn Bahasa Indonesia, but it is going to help me in the future. I am planning to go either to Germany or the Netherlands, I have not decided yet. However, SLANG provides me the opportunity to learn both languages which will help me a lot during my study abroad.
